Sergio Busquets, certainly one of the greatest defensive midfielders in the history of professional football, appeared dejected after Spain’s loss against Morocco.
At the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, all eyes were on the star player of the Moroccan football team. The match in question was the Round of 16 of the World Cup. For the uninitiated, Sergio Busquets happens to be undoubtedly one of the very finest defensive midfielders the world of professional football has ever witnessed. He is the absolute pride of Spain.
His sagas related to the game of football are seemingly endless, with his conquests far overshadowing some brief moments of disappointment and despair. In this scenario, however, the match that he happened to have been playing was against the formidable team of Morocco. The end of the match saw the team Morocco enjoying a win against their team of Spain. The ultimate score with which they won was 3-0 in favor of the Moroccans. Though the match had ended in a 0-0 draw, the extended play with the penalties thrown in clinched the deal for Morocco.
Following the end of the match and the overall game not going in their favor, the crestfallen look on Busquets’ countenance was clearly visible to all of the players, all of the spectators present in the stadium, and his millions of fans from all over the globe. All the more disappointing for him was the fact that, as an afterthought, the Spanish team had actually not left a single stone unturned in giving the match their very best shot. He tried to recapitulate his contribution to the match and found himself justified in more ways than one.
According to his own opinion, he had always excelled at taking the ball effectively from his opponent, which he had done numerous times in the course of the game. His control over the ball thereafter was also without any hiccups whatsoever. He also paused to reflect on the short and long passes he had made, but he couldn’t really chastise himself on any real issue. In his opinion, their team must have fought hard for the game to end in a 0-0 draw. The penalties, however, were another matter altogether, where the team of Morocco went one up on them and ultimately won the match. Their victory effectively eliminated Spain from the World Cup. The only point of solace for Busquets was the fact that it was not he who mattered more than the team and that the team had taken the loss in the correct spirit.
