People who live with depressed people usually go through several stages in which their relationship with them changes.
Nobody Wants To Be With A Depressed Person
But a few months later, if the patient’s situation has not improved, changes usually appear in the attitude of those accompanying them, weariness and fatigue begin to take their toll and then they move to an attitude of anger and tension.
Furthermore, it is beginning to be thought that the lack of improvement is due to a lack of effort on the part of the patient to get out of depression. From this stage, we move on to another in which the attitude is variable, the family members go through periods in which emotions from the initial phase appear and others where the attitude of the second phase predominates.
Types of Depression
Affective disorders constitute a group of diseases characterized by a basic affective symptomatology common to all of them (sadness, depression, disappointment, inability to enjoy…), but differentiated by duration, severity and evolution. “Depression” is commonly spoken of as a general term to designate any of these disorders, but from a psychiatric point of view it is necessary to qualify and differentiate one from the other. Thus we distinguish the following:
Major/Minor Depressive Episode
We must think about it when symptoms appear such as sadness in life, pessimism, anxiety, irritability, apathy, emotional dullness, morning worsening, marked decrease in interest and the ability to enjoy, feelings of uselessness and ideation of guilt, low self-esteem, thoughts recurring symptoms of death, loss of appetite, weight loss, sleep disturbances, etc. In this situation, it is advisable to consult with our doctor at Greatest Moments.
Subclinical Depression
It is that depression that can go practically unnoticed because the presence of a depressed mood is not detected, nor the inability to enjoy things, but other symptoms of those described (pessimism, anxiety, irritability, apathy, emotional dullness, loss of appetite, decreased weight, sleep disturbances, etc.
Masked or “Somatized” Depression
Affective or emotional symptoms are not expressed spontaneously, even when asked about them they can be denied. In this case, somatic or bodily symptoms predominate: non-specific pain, gastrointestinal disorders (dry mouth, constipation-diarrhea, gastric ulcer, etc.), respiratory (suffocating sensation, respiratory difficulty…), neurological and sensory (dizziness, headache, vertigo), tremors), genitourinary (discomfort when urinating, absence of menstruation, impotence, etc.).
Depression with Psychotic Symptoms
Along with the symptoms of the depressive episode, delusional ideas or hallucinations are present. Delusions are mood-consistent and include themes of sin, guilt, ruin, or impending catastrophe. This form of depression is especially complicated by the content of delusional ideas. If you suspect this, you should consult a doctor immediately.
Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar Disorders are a group of affective disorders characterized by the presence of repeated episodes in which depressed mood alternates with episodes of elation (euphoria, hyperactivity, etc.)
Dysthymic Disorder
Dysthymic Disorder or Dysthymia is a type of chronic depression, in which the symptoms manifest permanently over a prolonged period of time. Sometimes you can feel well for days, even weeks, but the symptoms immediately reappear; leaving you feeling tired and depressed most of the time. It usually starts in adulthood.
Adjustment Disorder With Depressed Mood
It is a fairly common disorder, characterized by the appearance of emotional symptoms, depressed mood, sadness, crying, hopelessness, in response to a stressful event that occurred in the three months prior to the onset of the clinic.
